Hayes welcomes partnership approach to enhancing Ireland's National Historic Properties

Mr. Brian Hayes, TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW) today (2 February 2014) welcomed the interest shown by individuals and companies in enhancing our existing National Historic Properties’ facilities.

In November 2013, the OPW published an advertisement seeking suggestions or proposals from individuals or companies, who might wish to provide new or enhanced facilities at its heritage sites on a licence basis.

Speaking today, Minister Hayes welcomed the interest shown to date “So far, over 40 requests for information have been received, with 13 proposals being submitted to date. An open and transparent process has been designed and each of the proposals received will be evaluated and progressed over the coming weeks. It is expected that many of these business ideas will bring greater footfall to sites and offer additional facilities for the visitor to enjoy. They will also show that the partnership approach between both State and private commercial bodies can operate in tandem at our heritage sites. I’m also cognisant of the importance of job creation and the impact this can have, particularly in the more rural parts of Ireland. The OPW is fully committed to exploring this potential partnership and creating an expanded and enhanced tourism offering.”

Minister Hayes concluded by saying, “As there is no cut-off date for receipt of expressions of interest, I would urge individuals or companies to reflect on whether they can provide an additional service at any of our National Historic Properties, which enhances the tourist experience and provides for job creation opportunities.”
