Minister Coveney, who today announced that over half a million passports have already been issued this year

Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney has announced that over 500,000 passports have already been issued by the Passport Service this year.

Commenting on the figures, Minister Coveney said:

The online passport renewal service, accessible at www.dfa.ie/passportonline, has, since its launch at the end of March, contributed significantly to our ability to meet the high demand for passports. Online renewals now account for almost 17% of all applications, well ahead of initial projections.

The target turnaround time for online renewal is ten working days plus postage. In actual fact, 90% of online applications are currently being processed within just five working days. The online renewal service is, therefore, a prime example of innovation driving excellence in the delivery of services to Irish citizens.

For anyone still looking forward to summer holidays abroad,  my advice is straightforward:

  • Check your passport before booking your trip.
  • Consult the www.dfa.ie/passports to identify the correct application route
  • Apply on time and through the correct route.
  • Renew online if possible.
  • And travel safely.

Minister Coveney also reminded all passport holders to register with the passport office for a free passport renewal reminder e-mail at https://www.eforms.gov.ie/en/reminder/passport/ and to download the Department’s award winning travel advice app Travelwise.
