Taoiseach Enda Kenny with Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat

Taoiseach Enda Kenny met with the Prime Minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat, in Government Buildings today as part of his series of engagements with EU counterparts. The meeting took place in advance of Malta’s first ever Presidency of the EU, which begins on 1 January 2017, and is likely therefore to see the commencement of the Brexit negotiations, following the expected triggering of Article 50 by the UK before the end of March.

In addition to Brexit and the Maltese EU Presidency, the Taoiseach and Prime Minister Muscat discussed a range of issues including migration, Syria, climate change, and the Digital Single Market. They exchanged views on the economic situation, noting the progress made in both countries and across the euro area more generally. They reaffirmed their strong commitment to the Union as the essential framework for Europe’s peace, prosperity and security, noting the shared approach to many issues at EU level, and exchanged views about how best to rebuild citizens' confidence in the European project.
