Appointment to the post of Secretary General of the Department of Communications Energy & Natural Resources

The Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte T.D has announced that at its meeting today the Government approved the appointment of Mr. Mark Griffin to the post of Secretary General of the Department of Communications Energy & Natural Resources with effect from 1st September 2013 on the retirement of Mr. Aidan Dunning.

Mr. Griffin is currently the Assistant Secretary for Water at the Department of Environment, Community & Local Government.  He has led the implementation of the Government’s water reform programme including the establishment of a public water utility (Irish Water).   Mr Griffin has served as an Assistant Secretary in the Department of the Environment for seven years, leading the planning division for much of that time.    Aged 48, and a native of Galway City, he was educated at St Joseph’s CBS, Nenagh, and in Trinity College, Dublin.

In accordance with the TLAC arrangements for Secretaries General, Mr. Griffin’s appointment is for a 7 year term.

Speaking in relation to the current Secretary General, Mr. Aidan Dunning, who will retire later this year Minister Rabbitte said “Since taking office I have greatly appreciated the advice and support of Mr Aidan Dunning, who has given exceptional public service.  His assiduous commitment to the goals of this Department has been of the highest standard.  His dedication and leadership will be greatly missed”.
