The River Shannon Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Study - Public Open Days

Jacobs has been appointed by the Office of Public Works to carry out the Shannon

Catchment Flood Risk Assessment & Management Study.

Jacobs will be holding a series of public open days in the Athlone area to commence a consultative dialogue with those who are interested in the Shannon CFRAM Study. The events have been designed to seek local views on what should be considered when examining solutions for managing flood risk in the future.

There have been a number of major floods across the Shannon area over a number of years with significant damage to crops, wildlife and infrastructure.

The Shannon CFRAM Study will focus upon areas known to have experienced flooding in the past and areas that may be subject to flooding in the future. The study was commissioned in

2011 and is due for completion in 2015 with the publication of the Flood Risk Management Plans (FRMP). The FRMPs will define the current and future risks of flooding in the Shannon area and set out how these risks will be managed, this will include measures in relation to flood protection, flood prevention and being prepared in the future.

Jacobs recognise that all the information and data, including the views and experiences of the public, will need to be considered to ensure that important infrastructure, people, landscapes and nature are protected against the future impacts of flooding and to ensure any engineering or alternative solutions proposed to address the flooding issues do not impact further on the environment.

To understand what needs to be considered and included in the decision making process, Jacobs welcome the public and invite the knowledge of a wide range of stakeholders including local communities, throughout the project’s life, to ensure that the best range of options are considered when addressing flood risk.

The events will be held over two days in Athlone at the following locations:

Athlone Radisson Blu

Northgate Street, Athlone, Co Westmeath

De Constien Suite

Friday 27 April 2012 5pm – 7pm

Athlone Centre Shopping Centre

Mardyke Street

Athlone, Co Westmeath

Saturday 28 April 2012 10-am-4pm

The public will have the opportunity to find out more about the study, meet members of the

project team and provide their views on what should be protected and any views that they

may have on potential solutions based on knowledge of their areas.
