Climate Action and Housing for All take centre stage at Government of Ireland village at the National Ploughing Championships 2022

The Taoiseach and a number of Ministers will attend the 2022 National (and World) Ploughing Championships from tomorrow in Ratheniska, Co Laois. Over the three days of the Championships the Government of Ireland village, comprising over 125 stands, will showcase a wide range of information and services to visitors. The Championships offer an unrivalled opportunity to showcase citizen-focussed delivery of services and information provision. A dedicated ‘Housing for All’ presence will provide services and information to visitors, and ‘Climate Action’ will be a feature across a range of the exhibitors in the Government of Ireland village.

Climate Action and Sustainability

Sustainability and climate action will be a key focus of Government activity at the event, exploring how rural communities can lead on climate solutions. This theme will be explored through a range of activities, talks and exhibits that will make climate action accessible and relevant for a rural and farming audience. Talks at the event will focus on adapting to climate change, enhancing biodiversity, and embracing new business opportunities for rural Ireland in the low carbon economy. Visitors, young and old, will be encouraged to take the Climate Jargon Buster quiz and visit Government exhibits to learn more. Mywaste.ie will distribute 15,000 food waste caddies as part of a significant promotion. As part of the Creative Climate Action programme, artist and farmer Lisa Fingleton will produce a large-scale interactive drawing responding live to the solutions offered by farmers in response to climate change. The wall will provide a snapshot of the views of the farming community in Ireland in 2022.

Sustainability will be promoted throughout the Government of Ireland village through actions, initiatives, and encouraging all staff to use public transport or carpooling arrangements. The use of reusable recycled materials and reusable backdrops has been a key element of the approach to the event management. In addition, exhibitors are encouraged to take a digital-first approach to reduce the volume of leaflets on site.

Housing for All

Delivering Housing for All is a Government priority. Housing for All representatives will provide information to members of the public on a range of supports available to people who want to buy or rent or restore vacant dwellings. The marquee will also provide information on policies and programmes aimed at revitalising communities. Furthermore, as increasing construction sector capacity is an important element of Housing for All, they will showcase innovation in construction and provide up to date information to those interested in working in the construction sector or upskilling.

Services available to visitors to the Government of Ireland village include:

  • passport services
  • tax advice from Revenue staff
  • social welfare information and claims processing
  • CAP and other farm services with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine
