Our Rural Future: Minister Humphreys announces increased allocations to support Agricultural Shows this summer

Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, has today announced individual allocations of up to €6,000 to 119 Agricultural shows taking place this summer.

In total, €700,000 is being provided to support the return of the shows over the coming months.

Announcing the individual allocations, Minister Humphreys said:

“As Minister for Rural and Community Development, I know how much the Agricultural Shows mean to people in rural communities.

“Between cattle best of breed, dog shows, sheep and poultry competitions, and music, the events are extremely popular and I’m delighted to support their return to the summer calendar.

“Our shows signals fun, energy and a sense of community - something for all the family.

“They are a shop window for what is produced locally and bring visitors from near and far.

“Practically every weekend over the coming months there is an agricultural show on somewhere in Ireland. I urge people to get out, enjoy them and give them your full support.”

Each show will attract funding in the region of €5,000 - €6,000, with funding based on vouched expenditure.

Minister Humphreys added:

“I recently announced increased funding of €700,000 to support the Irish Shows Association, and I am delighted to today confirm the individual allocations for shows all across rural Ireland.”

“I am particularly pleased to announce funding of up to €6,000 to each show to assist each meet the costs of putting them together - on the back of huge voluntary endeavour.

“I believe it is of vital importance to our rural communities that we support the efforts of the show committees and the work of their volunteers. I hope that this funding will help put the shows on a firmer financial footing and provide vital support to the committees.

“I’m delighted to support the Irish Shows Association and like many others I look forward to getting out and about and visiting our Shows this summer.”

The Minister also welcomed the approval of over €313,000 in LEADER programme funding to the Irish Shows Association, which will be used to support the roll out of a National Shows Management software system for use by agricultural and rural shows nationwide.

This funding was approved by the Local Action Groups (LAGs) in Monaghan, Mayo, Cork West and Galway East as part of the LEADER programme Co-operation Measure.

The Minister concluded:

“I am delighted to be able to acknowledge the hard work, commitment and dedication that goes into every show and I am pleased that the Irish Shows Association is once again working with my Department to administer the funding.  I hope to have the opportunity to visit many agricultural shows throughout the country this year to see first-hand the impact these shows make to the vibrancy of our local rural communities.  “

Notes to Editors:

The Agricultural Shows support programme is funded under Project Ireland 2040 as part of “Our Rural Future”. This is the whole-of-government policy for rural Ireland for the period 2021-2025. It represents a new milestone in the approach to rural development policy for Ireland and adopts a more strategic, ambitious and holistic approach to investing in and maximising opportunities for rural areas

The Department of Rural and Community Development funding is administered by the Irish Shows Association (ISA). The ISA is the official recognised body representing Irish Agricultural Shows on the island of Ireland. It has more than 130 affiliated agricultural shows (10 based in the North), which run throughout the summer and into the autumn each year. A full listing of participating Shows is published online.

LEADER

LEADER is part of Ireland’s Rural Development Programme that is co-funded by the EU, which operates a locally led, bottom-up, approach to meeting the needs of local communities and businesses. The programme supports private enterprises and community groups in rural areas. LEADER forms part of Ireland’s multi-annual Rural Development Programme which is co-financed by the EU and is part of the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP).

The LEADER programme is delivered by 29 Local Action Groups (LAGs) in 28 sub-regional areas. These groups are partnerships of public and private entities from a defined geographical area. LAGs are responsible for identifying and helping to develop local projects, which support the themes of Economic Development (including enterprise development and job creation), Social Inclusion and Rural Environment.

LAGs involved in this co-operation project

  • Monaghan Local Community Development Committee
  • Mayo Local Community Development Committee
  • Cork West Local Community Development Committee
  • Galway Rural Development CLG

Implementing Partners in this co-operation project

  • Monaghan Integrated Development CLG
  • Avondhu Blackwater Partnership CLG
  • South West Mayo Development Company CLG

This project commenced at the start of May 2022.

Total Project Cost €417,339 (€104,334.75 per LAG).

Total LEADER funding €313,004.24 (€78,251.06 per LAG).

The investment will:

  • Provide an umbrella solution for the deployment of online show management software for individual Irish Shows Association show members.
  • Considerably reduce the time that show organisers & secretaries spend in setting up and administering shows.
  • Migrate paper-based shows to online show management software
  • Contribute to the sustainability of shows nationwide and will provide a user-friendly, responsive online platform for ISA members, Exhibitors, Trade Stands and Sponsors, which will make show operations more streamlined and efficient to the benefit of all our stakeholders.
  • Allow Exhibitors, Trade Stands and Sponsors participating in multiple shows to save and reuse their information, without multiple data entry requirements.
  • Provide a website and agreed domain name to all shows using the system for marketing, registration and ticket access for end users.
