'Journalists play a vital role in our democracy, particularly in shining a light on wrongdoing. I regard any threat to the freedom of the press in Ireland as a threat to the State itself.
An Garda Síochána are working closely with Independent News and Media to do everything possible to ensure the safety of their journalists.'
