Over €500,000 in funding announced for Culture Ireland’s promotion of Irish arts globally

Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD, today announced funding of over €500,000 for the promotion of Irish arts globally through Culture Ireland’s Grants Programme.

The funding will benefit seventy five projects spread across 24 countries and covering dance, film, literature, music, theatre and visual arts.

Announcing the awards, Minister Martin said: 

“Through Culture Ireland, my Department is working towards the Global Ireland 2025 aim, to double Ireland’s global cultural footprint by supporting our artists to present work to audiences worldwide. In the past two years 532 projects were supported by Culture Ireland with artists compelled to find new and innovative ways to reach international audiences.  Emerging from the pandemic, it is vital that we continue to support them as their talent is endorsed by their continued selection to present on the world’s finest stages from Australia, across Asia and Europe, to the US and South America.”

Projects include:

  • Touring support for forty music acts appearing in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand including Junior Brother, Aoife Nessa Francis, Just Mustard, Loah, Clare Sands, Wallis Bird and CMAT;
  • Support for Irish filmmakers to attend screenings of their work at film festivals including the 13th Annual British & Irish Film Festival in Luxembourg (September), Newport Beach Film Festival (October), Irish Film Festival London (November),  Toronto Irish Film Festival (March 2023) and a major Ireland focus at Valladolid International Film Festival, Spain (October) ;
  • Irish writers, including Sara Baume and Annemarie Ní Churreáin, appearing at festivals in New Zealand, USA and India;
  • International Uilleann Piping Day at international venues in Argentina, Britain, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, and the United States (November);
  • Irish Baroque Orchestra and Peter Whelan at the Wigmore Hall, London (April 2023);
  • An extensive North American tour of Fishamble’s The Humours of Bandon by Margaret McAuliffe (April – June 2023)
  • Performances of Trade and Mary Motorhead by Mark O’Halloran and Emma O’Halloran at the PROTOTYPE Festival, New York and at LA Opera (January/April 2023)
  • International exhibitions by Irish artists including Gareth Kennedy, Sean McKernan and Avril Corroon and a showcase of contemporary Irish artists by MART Gallery in connection with CIACLA Los Angeles (Spring 2023);
  • Funding towards the 2022 Autumn/Winter Programme at the Irish Cultural Centre, Hammersmith, London and the Tyneside Irish Festival (November);
  • Participation of Irish galleries and exhibition of works by Irish artists at prestigious art fairs in London, Miami and New York.

The Minister added:

As part of Budget 2023 I have secured an increase of €2m from €4.6m to €6.6m for Culture Ireland.  This additional funding will ensure that Culture Ireland can continue to promote Irish arts worldwide and to create opportunities and support the international careers of Irish artists.  The funding will help Culture Ireland to achieve a wider reach for Irish arts and to continue to support strategic Irish Arts centres in London, New York and Paris to showcase the richness of Irish creativity to a global audience.”
