Minister Calleary attends Competitiveness Council

Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation Dara Calleary T.D. joined his fellow Ministers with responsibility for the Internal Market and Industry at today’s meeting of the EU Competitiveness Council in Brussels.  Commissioners Breton and Reynders represented the European Commission at the meeting which was chaired by the Czech Minister for Industry and Trade on behalf of the Czech Presidency.

Ministers agreed General Approaches on a number of important files, including on a Regulation to establish a framework of measures for strengthening Europe’s semiconductor ecosystem or the “Chips Act” which is of great importance to Ireland.

Welcoming these measures, Minister Calleary said:

“I very much support the objectives of the proposal to enable Europe to further develop its research, development and innovation landscape, increase Europe’s capacity to produce semiconductor chips, and improve our security of supply.”

Looking forward to the next steps of the EU legislative process, Minister Calleary said:

“Ambitious proposals require ambitious investment and Ireland looks forward to playing our part in the work still to be done”.

Ministers also agreed a General Approach on a proposal for a Regulation providing for geographical indication protection for craft and industrial products.
