Statement by Minister of Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney on Ethiopia

I warmly welcome the Agreement for Lasting Peace through a Permanent Cessation of Hostilities reached today by the Government of Ethiopia and the TPLF. This agreement is a significant achievement and marks an important step towards peace and reconciliation in Ethiopia.

I would like to commend the African Union and all those involved in the talks, in particular the panel of high-level mediators and the Government of South Africa, for their efforts in bringing this Agreement to a conclusion.

Coming just before the two-year anniversary of this conflict, the agreement provides an opportunity to put an end to the violence and human suffering that has had a devastating impact on the civilian population and to ensure humanitarian assistance reaches all those in need.  Ireland, along with our EU partners, is ready to support the full implementation of the Peace Agreement, and to contribute to ensuring it leads to lasting peace for all Ethiopians.
